By Joseph Sarzyniak, Public Affairs Officer
After decades of devoted service, the halls of the VA Medical Center brim with mixed emotions as colleagues and friends gathered to honor an extraordinary leader—Royce Calhoun—on his retirement as Associate Medical Center Director.
His departure marks not just the end of a distinguished career, but the celebration of a legacy defined by compassion, innovation, and steadfast commitment to Veterans’ healthcare.
Royce’s journey began years ago, rooted in a simple desire to serve those who have served our country. Early in his career, he established himself as a principled leader. Bringing people together to accomplish great things. Royce will be remembered for his open-door policy, his receptive ear, and the remarkable way he connected with staff at every level—from medical professionals to administrative teams.
During his tenure as Associate Medical Center Director, Royce was instrumental in enhancing patient access to care and spearheading improvements that modernized our facilities. His leadership was pivotal during times of challenge, guiding the team through the complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic. Royce’s calm presence and clear communication provided a sense of stability for staff and patients alike when it mattered most.
Beyond his operational expertise, Royce fostered a culture of continuous improvement and learning. He championed initiatives for employee development, mentored countless emerging leaders, and never missed a chance to express gratitude to his team. His belief was simple yet profound: when you care for your team, they, in turn, provide better care for Veterans.
On his final day, as Royce walked the familiar corridors one last time, he was met with smiles, handshakes, and heartfelt thanks from every corner of the medical center. More than once, he reminded everyone that the successes were never his alone but shared with an outstanding team dedicated to the same noble mission.
As Royce Calhoun embarks on this new chapter—no doubt filled with adventure, relaxation, and cherished time with family—his influence will continue to resonate throughout the medical center. The systems built, values instilled, and friendships forged remain a testament to a career spent in service to others.
We wish Royce a well-earned retirement, and we honor a legacy that will inspire us for years to come.
