Men’s Health Week put's the focus on healthcare for men

During Men’s Health Week, June 15-21, the Department of Veterans Affairs raises awareness of preventable health issues, encouraging the early detection and treatment of diseases among American men and boys.

This includes the millions of male Veterans who count on the VA to deliver comprehensive care that improves their overall well-being. But no matter the week, men’s health is always a priority as VA. 

The week is a part of National Men’s Health Month, recognizing the importance of men’s health with activities and events to remind men to take care of their bodies. Daily exercise, a balanced diet, stress management and routine medical exams are a few of the ways we encourage Veterans—and all men—to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 13.2% of men aged 18 and over are in fair or poor health.

Here are some tips to help men take control of their overall health and wellness.

Be involved in your health care
Being involved means thinking of yourself as a partner in your healthcare. When you visit a provider, speak up. Say what's on your mind. And ask questions when you don't understand.

Be physically active
An active lifestyle can make you feel better at any age. With a few easy steps, you can add fitness to your life now.

Be safe
How often do you think about your personal safety? Know how to keep yourself and your family safe at home and when you're on the go.

Be tobacco free
Stopping smoking is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Here are tools and information to help you quit.

Eat wisely
Good nutrition can improve your health. Discover how to build your daily diet around smart choices and good habits.

Get recommended screening tests & immunizations
Screening tests help look for signs of an illness. Immunizations help prevent certain diseases. Together, they protect health and well-being.
