Veteran, Therapist work together to improve quality of life

Stories of resilience and determination are seen every day—but few are as inspiring as that of Vietnam Veteran Lyndon Sizemore and his respiratory therapist, Tiffany Laveist.
When Sizemore first entered VA’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, he relied heavily on a mobility scooter to get around. Facing possible hospitalization due to multiple health challenges, the road ahead was far from easy. Yet, from the very beginning, his determination to improve his quality of life never wavered.
With guidance and encouragement from Laveist, Sizemore began setting small but meaningful goals. During therapy sessions, Laveist would challenge him to walk. He started with a goal of taking just 500 steps daily. Time and time again, he pushed beyond expectations and, by the end of the program, was walking 3,500 steps a day.
“I was proud of him and how far he’d come; all of our staff was ecstatic,” Laveist said. “His progress was not only a testament to the effectiveness of the pulmonary program, but also to his relentless drive.”
Behind his success is also a strong support system. Sizemore credits his wife for motivating him daily, pushing him to keep going even on the toughest days. Together with Laveist’s professional care, that encouragement became a powerful force in his recovery.
Today, Sizemore has transitioned from depending on a scooter to walking on his own, an achievement that once seemed out of reach.
“It was a hassle always needing to take the scooter out the truck and put it together,” Mrs. Sizemore said. Sizemore’s journey stands as a powerful reminder that persistence, support, and expert care can transform lives.
“The program helped me a lot, and I am very thankful for Tiffany and hope my situation helps motivate other Veterans to never give up,” Sizemore shared. “I want fellow Veterans to always strive for a better, healthier future.
