Know your passion. Follow it. Dream it. Live it.

Many Veterans struggle with chronic pain and emotional distress. These challenges impact many aspects of their lives, at any age or time period past discharge from military service. Recognizing this, the Veterans Health Administration started using a Whole Health approach to care. This care is designed to honor our Veterans and offer whole person care by addressing physical, spiritual, and mental well-being. In a Whole Health approach to care, clinicians want to know what matters most to the Veteran and become a partner in their care. This approach places Veterans at the center of their care by taking time to understand their values, concerns, and strengths. Within this model of care, stands the Whole Health clinical program, “Transforming Health and Resilience through Integration of Values-based Experiences,” which we refer to as “THRIVE.”.

THRIVE is a nationally recognized 14-week program that combines education and skills practice using a Whole Health approach to care. THRIVE offers Veterans group sessions covering topics such as sleep, nutrition, stress reduction, emotional well-being, and other areas of overall health and wellness. The course is led by a team of health and wellness providers and experts. THRIVE sessions provide a supportive space for Veterans to learn and engage in meaningful activities. These activities are aimed at enhancing self-care practices that support overall well-being.

At the Sioux Falls VA, four groups of Veterans have completed the THRIVE program and reported positive experiences. They expressed satisfaction with the group interactions and learning new ways to manage their health. Review of pre and post-group assessments showed improvements in participants’ psychological well-being, including reduced levels of anxiety and depression, as well as increased confidence in pain management and overall quality of life.

For Veterans seeking to take charge of their health and resilience, the THRIVE program at the Sioux Falls VA offers a welcoming opportunity. Participants can expect to be part of a supportive community, where they can learn and grow together. To join our next THRIVE group, contact the Integrative Health Clinic at 605-336-3230, ext. 7604. The program’s 14 sessions are held on Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m. Health coaching sessions are also available for further support. We would be honored to have you join us on this path to wellness and start THRIVE-ing today!
