Thomas A Steinbrunner, FACHE (Col, USAF, Ret) was appointed as the Executive Director of the Alaska VA Healthcare System (AVAHS) on March 14, 2021. Mr. Steinbrunner collaborates with Department of Defense, Tribal, and Coast Guard health care systems to deliver health care services at 9 locations for 36,000 enrolled veterans throughout the state of Alaska. He leads a staff of 740 personnel, supporting the Anchorage VA Outpatient Clinic; a 35-bed Domiciliary Care for Homeless Veterans; a 15-bed Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitative Treatment Program; a 24-unit Compensated Work Therapy Transitional Residence; 10-bed Intensive Care and 24-bed Medical Service Units at the VA/DoD Joint Venture Hospital on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson; five Community Based Outpatient Clinics; a Compensated Work Therapy/Veterans Industries Program; and a Joint Program of Supported Housing with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD/VASH). He serves as the Chairperson of the Alaska Federal Healthcare Partnership. Prior to joining the VA as the Alaska VA Healthcare System’s Associate Director, Mr. Steinbrunner completed a 34-year military career in 2017. During this period, he served in leadership positions at several medical treatment facilities, in deployed operations, as well as at the regional, Air Force, and Department of Defense levels. In addition, he led multi-national humanitarian missions providing healthcare to medically underserved populations of Haiti, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic. He is Board Certified in Healthcare Management, as a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
