Dr. Espiritu: Hickory Community Based Outpatient Clinic Medical Director
Dr. Maria “Carmen” E. Espiritu, MD, has been a Staff Physician at the Bill Hefner Salisbury VA, since February 2016.
She has served as the Acting Associate Chief of Staff of the Section of PM&R in Bill Hefner Salisbury VA and has served as the Site Director under Research and Education for the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program affiliated with Atrium Health/Carolinas Medical Center.
Dr. Espiritu is board certified In Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and completed her Residency in PM&R at the Louisiana State University HSC Medical Center in New Orleans where she also served as a Chief Resident in 2000. Espiritu has resided in Hickory, North Carolina since December 2003.
Between January 2004 and February 2016, she has served in multiple capacities: as the Medical Director and physiatrist for the inpatient Rehab Units at Catawba Valley Medical Center and Frye Regional Medical Center, as the Medical Director for the Pain Clinic at the Catawba Valley Medical Center while also working in her own Private Practice in Hickory.
She is excited to work at the Hickory Community Based Outpatient Clinic and hopes to serve and learn from everyone. She and her husband of 31 years have a son. She enjoys spending time with her family taking funny “themed” yearly family pictures (for the past 29 years), volunteering at their church in Hickory, and taking care of their girl toy poodle, Rockie.
