The US Army will celebrate its 249th birthday on June 14, and for many Veterans it is a time to pause and honor one of the oldest and most trusted institutions in the country.

One 73-year-old Vietnam War Veteran fondly recalled his participation in the annual Army tradition of a unit’s oldest and youngest Soldiers cutting an Army birthday cake together with a ceremonial sword. “There is a lot of pride in celebrating the Army's birthday because it highlights the sacrifices and dedication of the men and women who have served and continue to serve our great nation,” he said.

A retired Sgt. 1st Class, who served in the Army for 20 years, explained why June 14 should be considered the most patriotic day of the year. “Not only is it the Army's birthday, but it's also Flag Day,” he observed.  “I don't think it's a coincidence that the date of the founding of our first military branch and the founding of our country’s most powerful symbol of freedom is one and the same.”

Both Veterans noted that the Army has a long history, and celebrating its birthday is just one of the many traditions Soldiers take pride in.
