VA Augusta celebrates VA’s Health Professions Education Week
PRESS RELEASE
March 13, 2023
Augusta , GA — VA Augusta Health Care System joins VA health care facilities nationwide in recognizing the contributions of VA faculty and academic partners during VA Health Professions Education Week (March 13-17, 2023).
Health professions trainees participate in over 7,000 wide-ranging training programs offered at 150 VA health care facilities, making VA the nation’s largest provider of health professions training. Health professions education in VA is conducted through long-standing partnerships with 1,400 U.S. academic institutions, including 96 percent of the nation’s medical schools.
“VA’s health professions education programs enhance the quality and access of care we provide to Veterans at VA Augusta,” said Dr. Constance Lavieri-Reynolds, VA Augusta Associate Chief of Staff for Academic Affiliations. “We’re so grateful for our health professions trainees, educators, our academic affiliates, and most of all, South Carolina and Georgia Veterans who actively engage in VA’s training mission. Our trainees and students often tell us the greatest reward of training at VA is serving Veterans.”
Academic affiliations also play an important role in expanding diversity among VA Augusta health care providers. Over 34,000 of VA’s health professional trainees (HPTs) come from Minority Serving Institutions nationwide, such as Hispanic Serving Institutions and Historically Black Colleges and Universities. In 2022, VA Augusta began partnering with Morehouse College of Medicine, part of the historic HBCU Morehouse College in Atlanta.
VA Augusta trains about 800 HPTs from 111 institutions every year. Offering training in more than 40 disciplines, VA Augusta educates physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, physical and occupational therapists, and more in the latest evidence-based medicine.
