BEDFORD, Massachusetts—VA Bedford Healthcare System is partnering with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive on Feb. 15 and 18, 2022.

This is part of a nationwide effort by VA medical centers to respond to the ongoing national need for blood due to the coronavirus public health emergency.

Healthy individuals are encouraged to Roll Up Your Sleeve Today. Veterans and members of the public wishing to donate blood need to schedule an appointment online. Walk-in donation is not available currently.

“By leveraging our resources to stem the shortage of vital blood and blood products, we are exercising VA’s ‘fourth mission’ to provide back-up health services to the nation in times of disaster,” Dr. Shilpa Rungta, VA Bedford Chief of Staff said. “We are also preparing to be better able to support Veterans who may need blood or blood products in the near term.”

VA Bedford HCS decided to support this effort after determining this action would not negatively impact Veteran care. The blood drive will be staffed and run by the American Red Cross who will provide all furnishings and supplies, including masks.

According to federal guidance, blood donors may access VA medical centers and blood donor agencies to participate in this lifesaving activity. The American Red Cross has also implemented additional safety measure including requiring masks and social distancing measures at all blood drives to ensure the safety of donors and staff.
