White Cane Day Celebrated at VA Bedford Healthcare System
The VA Bedford Visual Impairment Services (VIS) program hosted their annual White Cane Day event on October 16th in the Crossroads space.
VIS coordinator Amber Vaillancourt set up a table with demonstrations and information to celebrate White Cane Day and educate VA staff about services available to visually impaired Veterans.
Amber remarked, "White Cane Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about how vision loss impacts Veterans and the rehabilitation services we offer."
Throughout the event, Amber spoke with passing staff members about the significance of White Cane Day in bringing awareness to the white cane as a tool for safe travel. She provided information about the barriers faced by veterans with vision loss and how her program helps provide assistive technology and training to improve their independence.
Amber added, "It's meaningful to see staff participate in White Cane Day as it shows their commitment to addressing Veterans' needs."
A highlight was when Amber demonstrated a variety of white canes and explained the different techniques for using them. She also had veterans try out the ScripTalk reading device, Talking Book players, and other equipment that could be provided to eligible Vveterans. Feedback from staff was positive, with many remarking they learned something new about visual impairment services at the VA.
Overall, the White Cane Day event accomplished Amber's goal of increasing awareness about resources available for Veterans with vision loss. She looks forward to continuing to grow the program and help Veterans regain their independence.
