Birmingham VA deploys 11 employees to Hurricane Idalia response

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Birmingham VA Health Care System has deployed a team of 11 medical professionals to Florida, currently dealing with the devastation caused by Hurricane Idalia.

Comprised of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and certified nursing assistants, the team arrived in central Florida as the Category 3 storm made landfall early Wednesday morning, with winds reaching up to 125 mph.

The deployed staff will offer critical support to the Orlando VA Medical Center throughout the storm's aftermath. The Birmingham VA's primary concern is to provide immediate and effective medical support to those affected by this disaster and augment VA staff in Florida. It is common for VA staff to assist fellow VA medical centers whenever local operations permit.

This specific team of 11 Alabamians is offering critical support in medical responses, and ongoing care to Veterans.

The Birmingham VA team will remain in Florida to provide necessary medical services until VA facilities in the area return to full operational capacity. All Birmingham VA staff deployed are reported safe and are fully engaged serving Veterans in the hurricane hit region.
