The Birmingham VA Health Care System formally announced the Veterans Transportation Service (VTS) available to Veterans, Jan. 19.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to commemorate the occasion with over 40 guests in attendance. This included representatives from congressional offices, Veteran Service Organizations, and, most importantly, the Veterans we are honored to serve.

The service highlights VA’s commitment to meet Veterans where they are with one goal in mind; lift the barriers for all Veterans who struggle with gaining access to reliable transportation.

“We recognize the importance of ensuring that our Veterans have access to reliable transportation for their health care needs. The Veterans Transportation Service is our pledge to serve those who have valiantly served our country," says Dr. Ladi Kukoyi, Executive Director/CEO, Birmingham VA.

VTS provides eligible Veterans with dependable, safe, and cost-effective transportation to their VA health care appointments, as well as to approved non-VA appointments.

“I wouldn’t be able to make it to Birmingham to my appointments if it weren’t for this service and the help of my family,” said Army Veteran Wayne Goble. “I have often wondered about Veterans who are at home with no one to help them. Thank you for this service and the help you provide to take care of all of us.”

Since its launch last month, VTS has transported more than 300 Veterans to and from VA, as well as community care medical appointments within a 50-mile radius. The program will now be expanded to Veterans in different areas across the state including Huntsville, Gadsden, Anniston, and Oxford.

“Addressing transportation barriers is crucial, especially for Veterans in rural areas or those with disabilities,” highlighted Kukoyi. “By eliminating transportation as a barrier, we're also supporting preventative healthcare efforts, enabling early interventions that can prevent health conditions from deteriorating.”

This free program will be available to all Veterans who qualify for VA health care benefits and have VA approved medical appointments. Veterans who wish to schedule an appointment to use this service can schedule through the VTS Portal here.
