Structure Fire Reported at a Hot Spring VA Hospital Warehouse

Hot Springs , SD — Hot Springs, SD- On December 5, 2023, at approximately 10:00 p.m. M.S.T., Hot Springs Veteran Affairs Fire Department (VAFD) and Police Department (VAPD) received a fire alarm from an unoccupied warehouse on the Hot Springs VA Medical Center grounds.

Structure Fire Reported at a Hot Spring VA Hospital Warehouse
Hot Springs, SD- On December 5, 2023, at approximately 10:00 p.m. M.S.T., Hot Springs Veteran Affairs Fire Department (VAFD) and Police Department (VAPD) received a fire alarm from an unoccupied warehouse on the Hot Springs VA Medical Center grounds. VAFD entered the warehouse and confirmed that the sprinkler system had extinguished the fire. Heavy smoke was produced from the smoldering boxes stored in the dock area of the warehouse. Mutual aid was called by VAFD and Hot Springs Volunteer Fire Department (HSVFD) also responded with an engine and ladder truck with approximately 10 personnel. HSVFD assisted VAFD in salvage and overhaul operations of the affected area. There were no injuries reported due to the fire. No Veterans or staff were in the affected building and no Veterans were evacuated. The fire will not affect patient care and no health services have been disrupted due to the fire. A thorough investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. However, the initial assessment as to the cause of the fire has ruled out foul play. The fire suppression system successfully extinguished the fire.
