Area Veterans Participate in National Veterans Winter Sports Clinic

PRESS RELEASE

March 27, 2023

SNOWMASS VILLAGE , CO — Boston and Providence-area Veterans are participating in the 37th National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic, March 25 to 31 in Aspen-Snowmass, Colo.

Five Veterans from Assonet, Reading and Scituate, Mass., and Foster and Warren, R.I., are taking part in alpine skiing, sled hockey, and several other adaptive sports activities, among nearly 350 disabled Veterans, supported by approximately 600 volunteers and 200 coaches.

“Adaptive sports is empowering for Veterans. It helps them transcend disabilities, giving back the ability to be active and involved with their peers,” said Jenny Vulpis, VA Boston Healthcare System adaptive sports coordinator, who traveled with the Veterans to Colorado. “It’s a tremendous source of inspiration for the participants, as well as the other Veterans, staff and volunteers who work with them.”

For more than three decades, the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic has helped Veterans overcome obstacles and challenge their perceived limitations. World-class instructors and recreation therapists work with Veterans to help them experience the full potential of adaptive sports and recreation therapy for improving health and well-being.

The five-day Winter Sports Clinic offers participants adaptive sports therapy opportunities, including Alpine and Nordic skiing, sled hockey, scuba diving, snowmobiling and rock climbing, in addition to workshops and other activities. VA hosted the first clinic in 1987 with 90 disabled Veterans.

The Winter Sports Clinic is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Disabled American Veterans, with financial assistance from corporate sponsors and individual donors.
