April 5, 2024

Des Moines , IA — VA Central Iowa Health Care system received three recommendations for improvement from the VA’s Office of Inspector General in a recent routine report.

The inspection focused on core processes in the areas of leadership and organizational risks; quality, safety, and value; medical staff privileging; environment of care; and mental health.
The report focused on VA medical facilities that provide healthcare services to Veterans and had no recommendations for three of the areas -- leadership and organizational risks; quality, safety, and value; and environment of care. The report offered three recommendations for the areas of medical staff privileging; and mental health.
“VA Central Iowa takes pride in providing the best care possible,” said VA Central Iowa Medical Center Director Lisa Curnes. “We were eager to receive the committee’s recommendations. We use this information to improve the care we provide our Veterans.”
VA Central Iowa regularly ranks higher than other hospitals in the region with more than 87% of respondents saying they are satisfied with the care they receive.
The purpose of the OIG inspection is to provide meaningful, independent oversight of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The results of the report and the recommendations will be sent to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs Denis McDonough as well as the appropriate U.S. House and Senate committees for their review.
VA Central Iowa Health Care System serves more than 32 thousand Veterans in 40 Iowa Counties and two counties in northern Missouri. In fiscal year 2022, the system had more than 400 thousand outpatient visits.
