Central Iowa Veterans Affairs Medical Center will host the 2023 National Veterans Golden Age Games from May 20 to 25, 2023, at various venues across Iowa’s capital city region with track and field events now slated for Simpson College in Indianola.

More than 700 Veterans, aged 55 and over, will arrive in Des Moines to compete in the games, presented annually by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The event is the only national multi-event sports and recreational seniors competition program designed to improve the quality of life for all senior Veterans, including those with a wide range of abilities and disabilities.

Track and field events were initially scheduled to be held in Des Moines but have been assigned a new venue on the Simpson campus, May 22, 23, and 24.

“Simpson College Athletics is honored to serve as host for the track and field competition of this great event,” said Marty Bell, Simpson College athletics director. “We are pleased to have the opportunity and provide this experience for those individuals who sacrificed and served. We look forward to the excitement this event will bring to our campus and the Indianola community.”

Field events include discus, shot put, javelin and long jump for Veterans aged 55 and over, May 22-24.

Track events will include races of various distances from 50 to 3000 meters for Veterans on May 22-23. Also, a 1500 meter Powerwalk will be held Wednesday, May 24.

All sessions are free and open to the public.

“We are very excited to hold our events in historic Buxton Stadium and on the Simpson Campus,” said Brittany Hook, director of the National Veterans Golden Age Games. “This is the perfect venue for our Veteran athletes to compete in these events and to exhibit the motto of the games ‘Fitness for Life.’”

The National Veterans Golden Age Games offer sports competitions and health education sessions to demonstrate the value that sports, wellness, and fitness provides. The event, part of VA’s rehabilitation system of care, assists Veterans 55 and older to live an active and healthy lifestyle.
