Training for health professions

VA Central Western Massachusetts partners with several colleges, universities, and medical schools.  We have affiliations with 150 academic institutions, and we train 120 – 130 students, interns, and residents annually in the allied health professions. Our training programs include audiology, dietician/nutrition, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, psychology, neuropsychology, psychiatry, primary care, social work, and speech pathology.

Clinical Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Residency (2-year program)

The VA CWM clinical neuropsychology residency program is designed for trainees seeking postdoctoral specialty training in clinical neuropsychology. It is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association. The program recruits one new resident per year into its two-year program.

To be eligible for this residency position, applicants must: 

  • Be US citizens;
  • Be graduates of doctoral programs in clinical psychology or neuropsychology that have been accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), or Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS);
  • Have completed their dissertation and any other doctoral requirements prior to the start of residency;
  • Have completed an APA-approved predoctoral internship;
  • Have significant prior experience in clinical neuropsychology and have demonstrated a strong interest in practicing clinical neuropsychology as a profession

Psychology Internship Program

VA CWM psychology internship program is fully accredited by the APA-CoA and offers six (6) full-time internship positions each year.  

Our psychology internship is open to U.S. citizens pursuing doctoral degrees in clinical, counseling, or combined (clinical-counseling) psychology from institutions accredited by the APA, Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), or Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS). We offer competitive stipends and benefits. 

To apply, you must:

  • Complete at least 3 years of graduate course work, 300 direct intervention hours, and 50 direct assessment hours
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Be enrolled in a APA-accredited, CPA-accredited, or PCSAS-accredited or provisionally-accredited, Clinical or Counseling (or combined Clinical-Counseling) Psychology doctoral program
  • Complete graduate program prerequisites for internship, including passing your comprehensive examination
  • Have your dissertation proposal approved by the application deadline
  • Receive your training director’s certification that you are ready for an internship 

Clinical Neuropsychology Practicum Program

The Neuropsychology practicum student obtains broad training experiences evaluating outpatient Veterans across the age spectrum. The overall goals of the practicum program include:

  • Develop and refine neuropsychological evaluation skills, with a focus on assessment, conceptualization, and report writing.
  • Broaden knowledge of neuropsychological domains and syndromes.
  • Enhance an understanding of and appreciation for military Veterans and military culture.
