Dr. Axon is an Internal Medicine physician with the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System in Charleston.

Having joined the VA in 2009, Dr. Axon provides inpatient care to Veterans in Charleston.

 

In this role, he is responsible for the general medical care of hospitalized Veterans and teaching resident physicians and student doctors from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). He is passionate about providing safe, high-quality Veteran-centric treatment and about innovating better systems of care.

 

Dr. Axon is a Professor of Medicine at MUSC. He currently leads the Charleston Health Equity and Rural Outreach Innovation Center (HEROIC), a VA-funded health services research center that focuses on access to care and rural health. He also leads other research teams and directs two post-doctoral training programs in health systems research and quality improvement. 

 

Dr. Axon earned his MD degree with honors at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine, followed by a dual residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Duke University. He also has a Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) degree from MUSC.

 

Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife, doing church activities, reading, exercising, spending time outdoors, and cooking various cuisines.
