Request for Waiver
When you request a waiver, you are requesting that we terminate collection action on a debt.
Financial Status Report
You now have two options (Portable Document File or Fillable Form) to complete the Financial Status Report Form. Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to complete the Financial Status Report in either format.
Letter update: DMC will start monthly status letters beginning May 2021. If you received a letter recently that proposed a different payment plan, please give us a call. DMC will NOT systematically change payment plans from Veteran choice plans until we hear from you, and we apologize for any confusion. Collection Paused for New Debts Created After April 1, 2020
Can I pay my debt during the suspension period?
Yes. We can work with you to establish a repayment plan/extended repayment plan that works for your situation, or if you choose you may pay the debt in full.
I received a notification from a VA Regional Office that I have a debt and will receive an additional letter from the VA Debt Management Center (DMC). When will I receive this letter?
Debts created after April 1, 2020 are automatically suspended. Issuance of the DMC letter mentioned by the Regional Office will be deferred until at least September 30, 2021.
What are my COVID-19 debt relief options?
COVID-19 debt relief options include:
- Automatic suspension of repayment through September 30, 2021 (no action required by you for new debts created beginning April 1, 2020)
- Extended repayment plan
- Adjusting the debt amount through the compromise process
- Requesting a waiver of the debt
Am I able to extend my timeframe for payments?
We can extend your payments if you are experiencing financial hardship.
How can I lower my payment plan?
You can contact us through one of the below methods. We will work with you to develop a plan for your specific circumstances.
Are interest or fees accruing on my debt while it is suspended?
VA has stopped the accrual of interest and fees during the suspension period.
I have a medical co-payment debt; can DMC assist me?
Please contact VA Health Resource Center at 866-400-1238 to discuss your options for medical debt.
I have a separation, severance, or readjustment overpayment, are these also suspended?
Please contact the Regional Office at 800-827-1000 to discuss your recoupment options.
When does the suspension period end?
The suspension of new debts runs from April 1, 2020, through September 30, 2021.
If collection is paused, why am I getting a letter/statement from VA?
VA has several reasons for sending you information on your debt. We want to inform you of:
- Your current debt balances
- That collection on your accounts is suspended through September 30, 2021
- That relief options, such as an extended repayment plan, compromise or waiver are available
- How to contact us
VA’s intent is to provide you with awareness and options:
- No action is necessary if you would like your account to remain suspended
- If you would like to take advantage of other options, please contact the DMC at 800-827-0648
Adverse actions including accrual of interest and fees will not occur while your debt is suspended
Why are you sending me a statement if I do not need to do anything?
To make you aware of your debt and available options should you choose to address your debt now.
You do not need to wait until after September 30, 2021 to take advantage of other relief options such as an extended repayment plan, waiver, or compromise.
My debt was referred to the Treasury Offset Program (TOP), how does this affect me?
TOP will not offset your debt during the suspension period through September 30, 2021. If you have a remaining debt balance when the suspension period ends, TOP will send you a notification of when recurring offsets will begin or resume. VA may be able to accept payments if your debt has only been referred to TOP and not to Treasury’s Cross-Servicing Program (CS).
My debt was referred to Treasury’s Cross-Servicing Program (CS), how does this affect me?
CS will suspend your debt through September 30, 2021. If you had existing payment arrangements, those arrangements will continue unless you contact CS to update your arrangement. You can contact CS at 888-826-3127.

Veterans, members of the Armed Forces and family members who incur debts as a result of their participation in most VA compensation, pension and education programs as well as home loans closed before January 1, 1990, receive letters from DMC notifying them of their rights as well as their obligation to reimburse the Department of Veterans Affairs. If you have a debt with us, you may have questions concerning payment plans, amounts offset from your benefit payments and what to do if payment of the debt would cause hardship. Many answers can be found on this page and other pages of this Web site.
