VA Detroit's Radiation Oncology Department Receives Accreditation for Excellence

Detroit , MI — The Detroit VA Healthcare System has been acknowledged by the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), through their Accreditation Program for Excellence (APEx) as being recognized as a center of excellence in Radiation Oncology care for Veteran cancer patients.
To receive this accreditation, the Radiation Oncology department underwent a rigorous evaluation, including an in-depth self-assessment and a facility visit, to ensure the department’s adherence to APEx Standards. The APEx Standards surround five main factors in patient care including: the “process of care”, the radiation oncology team, safety, quality management and patient centered care.
“This is a wonderful representation of the development the Detroit VA Healthcare System is dedicated to”, said Chris Cauley the Detroit VA Healthcare System’s executive director. “We strive for excellence in all aspects of care for our Veterans.”
The Radiation Oncology service is now one of five centers of excellence in the Detroit VA Healthcare System, a group of departments externally recognized for their quality of care.
“Undergoing this accreditation process allowed us to take a closer look at each of our procedures and determine how we can better fit into the standards of care set by ASTRO”, said Dr. Keqin Tang, the section chief of Radiation Oncology at the Detroit VA Healthcare System. “We are proud to have earned this recognition and will continue to evolve and adapt to this ever-changing specialization.”
