Body Cameras for Veteran Health Indiana Law Enforcement Officers

We are excited to share Veteran Health Indiana Police Officers are now utilizing body worn cameras.  Body cameras help keep our officers, Veterans, employees, and community members safe.

They demonstrate transparency and strengthen our commitment to de-escalation and avoiding the use of force, whenever possible.

These cameras will not record all the time, but will be turned on for enforcement activities, such as traffic stops, disruptive behavior calls, and transporting individuals in custody.  Body cameras automatically activate to record video and audio when an officer draws their issued firearm from their holster or activates the emergency lights in their police vehicle.

Video will not be recorded in locations where a reasonable expectation of personal privacy exists unless there is a clear and compelling need for a recording.  VA Police will not initiate recording in inpatient mental health wards, intensive care units, or Community Living Centers unless there is a clear and compelling need to record.  Footage from body worn cameras will only be used for police investigations and court proceedings, or for limited other purposes as allowed under federal law.

What do body worn cameras look like?

  • This is a picture of a VA police officer with their body worn camera in place, located in the center of the chest.  When the camera is recording, the officer will see a red light flashing on the top of the device, but you may not see this when interacting with the officer.

  • Officers are encouraged to tell individuals they are recording.  Although VA Police will make every effort to notify individuals that body cameras are recording, VA Police are not required to start or stop recording solely at the demand of an individual or group.

Key Points to Remember:

  • Body cameras are not always recording.  Body worn cameras will be turned on for law enforcement and investigative purposes.
  • Body cameras are an additional tool VA Police will have in order to improve safety and security at Veteran Health Indiana facilities. For more information about VA Police and body worn cameras, check out the frequently asked questions.

VA Police are an integral part of our healthcare system here. They protect our Veterans and staff, deter and prevent crime, and selflessly step in to assist whenever called upon.  They wear their uniform proudly, now with body cameras attached.

Thank you to our VA Police for their dedication to serve.  I encourage our Veterans, staff, and community to embrace this positive change for VA Police across the nation!
