Iowa City VA Honors Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action (POW/MIA)

Iowa City , IA — In honor of National Prisoner of War and Missing in Action (POW/MIA) Recognition Day, the Iowa City VA Healthcare System will hold their annual commemoration at the main hospital.
The ceremony will start with a flag raising in the morning in partnership with the American Legion Color Guard, Bugler, and American Legion Auxiliary. Following the flag raising will be an annual "Missing Man" ceremony and explanation of the "Missing Man" table layout on floor 1 near the west entrance of the hospital.
On September 17, 1979, Prisoner of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) Day was declared a National Day of Remembrance by Congress. POW/MIA Recognition Day recognizes personnel who served as prisoners of war and those who have been declared missing in action. According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, 83,114 Americans who fought in conflicts from World War II to present day are still missing.
