Rick Springsteen, an Iowa Air Force Veteran, enjoyed staying active and taking long walks until a few years ago when chronic pain, excess weight, and lack of motivation made it impossible.

In 2020, he was referred to the Lifestyle Medicine Clinic at the Iowa City VA Medical Center, where he was introduced to Lifestyle Medicine. This approach uses a functional medicine approach, and health coaching, nutrition counseling, cooking classes, and other opportunities for growth and recovery in a fun and supportive environment. The program has been so successful for so many patients that is being developed as a national curricular offering for VA facilities and staff by the Office of Patient-Centered Care and Cultural Transformation.

“My life changed when I bought into making healthy lifestyle choices,” said the Air Force Veteran, “I have dropped 55-60 pounds and kept it off. I have more energy, less pain, improved attitude. I embrace the day. Life is great.” He credits the program and ICVAMC staff for changing his life. These days, you can find Rick planting trees and getting over 15,000 steps per day while soaking in the sun and feeling his best. When he is not working outside, he is busy prepping salads or spending time with his family.

“You only get one shot at life”, said Springsteen. “I want to enjoy it as best as I can, be able to help my family, and bring laughter wherever I go.”

Rick’s advice for veterans who may be considering a change in their lives is simple: don’t be afraid to ask for help. “The trick is that it only works if you take responsibility for your own choices,” said Springsteen. “This team will supply you with the education and support that you need but you have to make the right choices. It’s not always easy, but when you feel the change, it’s worth it.”

This approach has been very successful, and the Office of Patient Centered Care and Cultural Transformation has begun the process of developing the Iowa City model for the Lifestyle Medicine Clinic as a national curricular offering for VA facilities and staff.
