The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center recently completed its 11th annual Adopt-A-Garden Contest Aug. 4, in which departments and individual employees adopt, plant, and tend to a garden area at the medical center.

This year, out of 12 entries, supply chain’s “Veterans are the Backbone of America” took first place, followed by surgery’s “Aim for the Starts” in second and prosthetics “Serving All Who Served” in third.

This is the fifth consecutive win for the supply chain, spearheaded by Pat Millan.

"I'm honored to have received this award for the fifth year in a row. This garden is just one way I like to show my passion for supporting veterans and I'm fortunate to have the support of supply chain to do it."

The winner of the Adopt-a-Garden Contest receives a traveling trophy and the ceremonial shovel used for the 1948 groundbreaking of OGJVAMC.

This year’s judges were Mindy Meyers, program director for Downtown Iron Mountain; Kristin Smith, director at the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center; and Sonja Matzke, vice president of corporate operations for CCI Systems Inc.
