In the holiday season, an annual event stands out not just for its festive cheer, but for the gratitude it extends towards those who served our nation.

The Christmas Shoppe for Veterans at VA Jackson Health Care is now in its 12th year. More than a shopping spree; it’s a heartfelt acknowledgment of the sacrifices of Veterans. The beauty of the event lies in its spirit of giving—every item is free for inpatient Veterans, making it possible for them to select gifts for their loved ones without any financial burden.

This unique shopping experience, coordinated by volunteer Chandra D’Avy and Mahalia Wright, Chief of the Center for Development and Civic Engagement, is entirely supported by the generosity of the community. All items available at the shop are donations, thoughtfully gathered to ensure a wide variety of choices for Veterans.

For many Veterans, especially those facing financial hardships or physical constraints, the holiday season can be a challenging time. The Christmas Shoppe breaks down these barriers, offering an accessible and inclusive shopping opportunity. It welcomes Veterans from the Community Living Center, State Nursing Facility, Mental Health divisions focusing on at-risk Veterans, Harbor House and even homebound Veterans. The event makes sure every Veteran can celebrate the holidays and choose special gifts for their families.

Christmas spirit

“The joy and gratitude in the eyes of our Veterans as they picked out gifts was a moving reminder of the true meaning of Christmas,” said Wright. “It’s about giving, sharing and remembering those who have given so much for our freedom.”

Each gift is wrapped with love by a team of dedicated volunteers. And the Christmas Shoppe isn’t just about the presents; it’s about the experience of being valued and remembered.

As the Christmas Shoppe wraps up another successful year, it leaves behind smiles, warm hearts, and a stronger sense of community. It reflects the true spirit of the season—one of giving and honoring those who have given so much.
