COVID-19 Vaccines and Booster Shots get updated guidance for Lebanon VAMC

Vials of COVID-19 vaccine

Data continue to show the importance of vaccination and booster doses to protect individuals from becoming infected and stave off severe outcomes of COVID-19.

During the recent Omicron surge of infections, those who were vaccinated and boosted were 21-times less likely to have severe negative outcomes compared to those who are unvaccinated.

As a result, CDC has updated recommendations to allow certain immunocompromised individuals and people over the age of 50 who received and an initial booster dose at least 4 months ago to be eligible for another mRNA booster to increase their protection against severe disease from COVID-19.

Separately, and in addition, based on newly published data, adults who received a primary vaccine and booster dose of Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine at least 4 months ago may now receive a second booster dose using a mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. VA follows CDC guidance on COVID-19 vaccination.

CDC recommendations include:

  1. A second booster dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine may be administered to individuals 50 years of age and older at least 4 months after receipt of a first booster dose of any authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine.
  2. A second booster dose of Pfizer vaccine may be administered to individuals 12 years of age and older with certain kinds of immune compromise at least 4 months after receipt of a first booster dose of any authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine.
  3. A second dose of the Moderna vaccine may be administered at least 4 months after the first booster dose of any authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine to individuals 18 years of age and older with certain kinds of immune compromise.
  4. A second booster dose may be administered with either the Pfizer or Moderna Covid-19 vaccine at least 4 months after receipt of a booster dose for any person who had the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) COVID-19 vaccine for both their initial vaccine and their booster dose.
