Veterans get landscape update at Community Living Center
VA Loma Linda Healthcare System’s Center for Development and Civic Engagement coordinated a special landscaping project to benefit Veterans at the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Veterans' Hospital Community Living Center Aug. 18 and 19.
CDCE worked with nearly 50 local Home Depot associate volunteers to update an outdoor area for Veterans and visitors.
The new outdoor space features trees, plants, flower boxes, hummingbird feeders, patriotic benches, paths, hand-painted murals and a shaded patio totaling $20,000 in donated supplies. The project was inspired by VA staff and community partners who envisioned better views and more visitor-friendly spaces for Veterans in the palliative care unit. The functional tribute is designed to enhance mental and physical well-being.
During project construction, VA nurses provided input to ensure the space was built with Veterans in mind. The area was refreshed to reduce stress, increase patient satisfaction, and promote health and healing. The landscape beautification aims to improve patients’ quality of life in mind, body and spirit. The outdoor visitation area increases access for families and friends to safely see their loved ones in palliative care.
The VALLHS Community Living Center is a VA nursing home that’s designed to resemble "home" as much as possible. There are activities for Veterans of all ages and family-friendly places for visiting such as the new outdoor patio. Veterans may stay for a short time or sometimes for the rest of their life. Veterans receive nursing home level of care, which includes skilled nursing and medical care plus help with activities of daily living. The mission of our CLC is to restore each Veteran to their highest level of well-being in a patient-centered healing environment.
VA Loma Linda is dedicated to providing an exceptional patient experience with the best medical care possible. We follow a whole health approach to support the mental health and well-being of every Veteran.
