LOUISVILLE, KY - The Robley Rex VA Medical Center welcomed nearly 300 motorcyclists on Wednesday as part of Run For the Wall's annual journey to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Started by James “Gunny” Gregory, then an active-duty Marine Corps Drill Instructor, the organization established its roots in Los Angeles in 1986. The plan called for a “welcome home” parade for Vietnam Veterans, but Gunny was the lone biker. Today, the annual pilgrimage has grown to three geographical cross-country routes and boasts nearly a thousand riders and participants.

“We look forward to our friends with Run For the Wall visiting our facility each year,” Associate Director for Operations Larry Roberts stated. “Our facility is the only one on their cross-country journey this year that permitted the riders to visit the inpatient Veterans - which created an incredible comradeship. Their presence is always a great morale boost for our patients and staff, and it’s a reminder about the role that Veterans service organizations play in the VA’s mission.”
