May 8, 2024
Manchester , NH — VA Manchester Healthcare System senior leadership presented the DAISY Award to Registered Nurse Gwynne Gamache, a primary care nurse case manager on April 29, 2024, for her extraordinary and compassionate patient care.
“I was truly surprised,” shared Gamache. “I was completely honored. And, because I had never met the veteran who nominated me, I had no idea why I was even getting the award.”
Associate Director for Patient Care Services Jennifer Winslow shared with Gamache, alongside veteran Robert McMahon and his wife Carol, the heartwarming nomination leading to the award ceremony.
“Mr. McMahon shared examples of Gwynne’s professionalism and nursing care,” stated Winslow. “He described their nurse-patient relationship as a collaborative partnership that offers support and a proactive approach to ensure he can continue to do all the things that he enjoys.”
Within his nomination, McMahon stated, “I believe that she exemplifies the highest standards of her profession. She comforts by action—she heals through effort.”
McMahon shared his appreciation for the support Gamache offers to his wife in times when she has needed resources and equipment to confidently care for him at home.
“The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses is presented to Gwynne in deep appreciation for all you do, who you are, and the incredible meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people,” said Winslow.
The DAISY Foundation, for which the award is named, was established in 1999 by members of the family of Patrick Barnes to express their thankfulness for the extraordinary care Barnes’ nurses provided to him during his critical care in his fight against Diseases Attacking the Immune System—DAISY.
Gamache received a DAISY Award certificate, a bouquet of flowers, a DAISY honoree pin, and The Healer’s Touch sculpture for the prestigious recognition.
McMahon presented his own tokens of appreciation alongside the DAISY Award formalities by attending the ceremony so he and his wife could meet Gamache in-person and thank her for the positive impact she has had on his health care and overall well-being and to hand deliver the box of chocolates they brought for her.
With almost 20 years in nursing and two years with the VA in July, Gamache expressed why she chose VA and what motivates her to own every moment of patient care.
“I would say when I know that I have made a difference in the veteran’s life. I want them to feel like there is truly someone in their corner—someone they can count on,” shared Gamache.
“Bob and his wife Carol are an amazing team,” added Gamache. “They both had great attitudes and worked hard at every turn. Carol is an amazing advocate for her husband. The three of us worked together as a team to accomplish what was needed.”
“In war, every soldier knows his best weapon is the soldier next to him,” shared McMahon. Gwynne is my best weapon. Peace of mind is healing.”
