Carrie Staggs, Nurse Practitioner resident for the Marion VA Health Care System
By Willy Martinez, Public Affairs Specialist

“I met many exceptional medical professionals and that’s when I knew that I wanted to be the person to make a difference in someone’s life.” Advancing with a degree as a nurse practitioner has given Carrie the opportunity to provide the care that she feels each person deserves.

Continuing to highlight our staff and VA’s Health Professions Education Week, we would like to share a more personal experience of one of our healthcare trainees.

We had the opportunity to interview Nurse Practitioner resident, Carrie Staggs, and here is what she has to say about her experience with Marion VA thus far.

Carrie’s Journey to Becoming a Nurse Practitioner

Her main reason for choosing to become a nurse practitioner has been to help others achieve a state of wellness. During high school, both of her parents suffered from severe health conditions.

“I met many exceptional medical professionals and that’s when I knew that I wanted to be the person to make a difference in someone’s life.”

Advancing with a degree as a nurse practitioner has given Carrie the opportunity to provide the care that she feels each person deserves.

Why Marion VA?

Carrie’s father was a Veteran, and the idea of helping other Veterans the way her father was cared for at the VA was very motivating for her. Carrie loves the idea of giving back to the heroes of their country.

“I strive to treat each patient as if they were a family member of my own.”

Why Continue On This Path?

“I don’t have one specific moment as an example, because I’ve care for so many wonderful Veterans. They often express gratitude verbally, with a warm smile, or a hug. This is what reinforces my decision to continue with this line of work.”

Future Aspirations

“I aspire to be a safe, confident, competent, nurse practitioner at the VA.”

Balancing Training and Personal Well-being

Carrie balances the demands of training with personal wellbeing by connecting with nature.

“I enjoy going for walks after work to clear my head. Being out in nature is very therapeutic for me.”

Advice for Prospective Trainees

“Be patient, the hiring process is extensive, but worth the wait and time invested. I have learned so much from every person I’ve encountered at the VA. The experience is unmatched with any other training I’ve had so far.”
