Heroes On The Water
On August 19th Heroes on the Water, American Legion, The Haven and Crab Orchard Refuge, and the Marion VA Health Care System coordinated efforts to host an incredible event for Veterans and their families.
Veterans were invited to come and relax on Crab Orchard Lake with kayaking and fishing, compliments of Heroes on the Water who provided all the fishing gear, kayaks and bait, not to mention breakfast and lunch!
The event was held from 8am-3pm with weather made to perfection at a breezy 82 degrees. There were 40-50 Veterans who came to participate in the activities, with another 20 or so volunteers. Along with the Veterans came caregivers, children, and Veterans who simply wanted to enjoy the fellowship and to provide encouragement to the other Veterans. Music was provided by Pele and surprise guest State Representative Paul Jacobs showed up for the event to show his support and appreciation for the Veterans. He and Mrs. Jacobs had a wonderful time connecting with all the Veterans.
Of the Veterans who attended, some had injuries that required adaptive equipment. Heroes on the Water provided that adaptive equipment as well which enabled Veterans who had strokes, back injuries, or several other conditions to participate right along with everyone else. One Veteran expressed what the event meant to him by saying, “Thank you all so much. Just this one experience has changed me. It’s absolutely amazing to be able to experience life in the moment without judgement of others. I will remember this day forever.”
Henry David Thoreau once said, “Many men go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” The day’s activities meant different things to each Veteran there, but what was more than evident that day were the grateful responses by Veterans to all who made the day possible for them! There was a sense of camaraderie, plenty of encouragement, many high-fives, loads of fun (for young and old alike) and a real sense of freedom and relaxation.
We want to thank Heroes on the Water for their commitment to our Veterans. We look forward to another great event in the Spring of 2024! Stay tuned.
