Local schools and community groups invited to thank Veterans during National Salute to Veteran Patients Week

PRESS RELEASE

February 15, 2022

Milwaukee , WI — Local schools and community groups are invited to thank hospitalized Veterans over social media during National Salute to Veteran Patients Week, Feb. 13-19.

“The Milwaukee VA recognizes and honors its inpatient Veterans this week,” said Jessica Serdynski, director of volunteer services. “This year we are emphasizing social media shoutouts and videos, which we share directly with patients. We’ve already had several school groups and local bands post short videos on Facebook thanking our Veterans, and they love seeing these.”

Throughout the week, inpatient Veterans receive homemade Valentine’s Day cards and letters as well as heart-shaped ornaments and gift/goodie bags. But it’s the social media posts that allow Veterans to see their fans.

“Video shoutouts are an excellent way to bring awareness to our Veterans and allow Scouts and Veterans service organizations a free, virtual opportunity to express their appreciation for our Veterans,” said Serdynski

Since 1978, VA has used the week of Valentine’s Day to provide a weeklong commemoration for Veterans.  More recently, because of hospital visitation limitations, VA has leveraged social media to thank Veterans.

It’s not too late for groups and individuals to salute our Veteran inpatients. Post your videos to social media with the hashtag #weLOVEourVETS and email the link to Milwaukee VA Voluntary Services at vhamiwvolunteerservice@va.gov. If you'd like to participate but can't do a video message, call Voluntary Services at 414-384-2000, ext. 41803.
