James McLain was appointed as the Executive Director of the Milwaukee VA Medical Center on April 23, 2023.

Mr. McLain began his career as a medical platoon leader in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He deployed with the 101st in 1990 for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and with the 3rd Area Support Medical Battalion in 2003 for Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He has worked in a broad array of healthcare activities, including finance, research, practice management, contracting, hospital administration, and network development. His military assignments include Brook Army Medical Center, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Patterson Army Health Clinic, and the U.S. Embassy, Bangkok.

After retiring from the Army in 2007, he was selected to become the Chief of VA New Jersey’s Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). After graduating from the VA Executive Career Field Career Development Program in 2010, he became the Associate Director for VA New Jersey's Lyons Campus. He was named Associate Director for the Milwaukee VA Medical Center in October 2012.

A native of Roswell, New Mexico, he received his Bachelor's Degree in 1987 from Trinity University in San Antonio and Master's of Healthcare Administration in 1996 from Baylor University. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
