Family is good medicine
Congratulations to Vicki Musech, our Minneapolis VA June Volunteer of the Month.
Vicki began volunteering at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System 14 years ago, even though it was an hour's drive from her home in rural Wisconsin.
She grew up with a brother who served in the Army during the Vietnam War. Unfortunately, his wartime experiences took a toll on his mental health and over time, he became estranged from the family and passed.
To honor her brother and support other Veterans who had given so much for their country, Vicki began volunteering.
Vicki and her childhood friend, Lois Dopp, are known as the "coffee ladies" at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. They bring warmth and comfort to Veterans and their families through their camaraderie and cups of coffee.
Throughout the last 14 years Vicki faced personal challenges, including the declining health of her husband, an Air Force Veteran who was exposed to Agent Orange during his service. With the help of the VA and the Fisher House, Vicki was able to provide care for her spouse while continuing her volunteer work.
Vicki recently stayed at the Fisher House while her husband was hospitalized and believes in the Fisher House motto, "Family is good medicine.”
Over the years, Vicki has connected with women from around the country who were also caregivers to their disabled husbands helping them navigate the challenges of being a caregiver.
Vicki's dedication and resilience has not wavered while honoring the memory of her brother and all those who served. Through her acts of kindness and selflessness, Vicki is a beacon of hope and comfort to everyone she encounters.
Her story serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, the power of compassion, service, and human connection can make a world of difference in the lives of others.
One person and a cup of coffee from a caring hand, can truly make a difference.
