Find out how to refill your prescriptions, where to pick up new prescription orders, and how to safely dispose of your medications at a VA North Texas Health Care System.

Refill your prescriptions

Your VA health care benefits include prescription medications and supplies prescribed by your health care team.
Be sure to order your refills at least 10 days before your supply runs out.


We will mail most prescription refills through the U.S. Postal Service. For medications that need to be kept refrigerated, or certain types of medical supplies, we may send your order through FedEx or UPS.

Refill request by mail are not accepted. Medications can be refilled by phone or online as listed above. For any questions or concerns, contact the pharmacy by phone at .

Pick up new prescriptions

You can pick up new prescription orders at our VA North Texas health care pharmacies.

We ask that you refrain from trying to refill prescriptions in person, so our pharmacists can focus on providing care to Veterans with urgent needs and new prescriptions. Refills are only available online or by phone.

Safely dispose of your medicine

Drop off your expired or unwanted medicine at a MedSafe box. Disposing of your medications safely can help protect other people and the environment.

You can find the large blue MedSafe boxes at:

  • Dallas VA Medical Center, Emergency Department and by Travel (near Agent Cashier) 
  • Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center, Pharmacy Waiting Area, Building 1, Room 173  
  • Fort Worth VA Clinic, Outpatient Pharmacy 
  • Tyler Centennial VA Clinic, Main Waiting Area

See below for a list of items that are ACCEPTABLE and UNACCEPTABLE.

ACCEPTABLE items include: 

  • Controlled substance prescriptions, including narcotics 
  • Non-controlled substance prescriptions
  • Over-the-counter (non-prescription) drugs

UNACCEPTABLE items (NOT allowed) include: 

  • Illegal drugs, including marijuana 
  • Needles or needle containers, broken or other sharp objects 
  • Trash
  • Inhalers 
  • Aerosol cans 
  • Liquid nutritional items  
  • Medical supplies 
  • Hazardous or flammable substances 
  • Unlawfully possessed medications

Note: Medications deposited in this container cannot be returned to you and will not be replaced.
