VA Northern Indiana’s Dr. Vera-Vazquez recognized by Michiana’s Forty Under 40
Dr. Ernest (Alex) Vera-Vazquez was recently recognized as Michiana’s Forty under 40 honoree.
Michiana Forty Under 40 is an initiative that highlights the achievements of 40 outstanding individuals who, despite being under the age of 40, have demonstrated extraordinary leadership, excellence in their careers, and a strong commitment to community service.
Dr. Vera-Vazquez received his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and attended medical school at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency in Southwest Michigan where he and his family decided to plant their roots.
Before serving Veterans at VA Northern Indiana Health Care System, Dr. Vera-Vazquez worked with the Indiana Health Centers where he served special populations including underinsured, non-insured, and migrants.
In April 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Vera-Vazquez spent 2 months in New York City where he aided care for 25 critically ill patients a day.
“It was in the middle of the lockdown, and it seemed that the only people that were there were military and medical personnel. I got to work alongside the Army, I really identified with them as well as the culture and could see myself working for the military or the VA,” said Dr. Vera-Vazquez.
When he returned home, he applied for a physician position at the Jackie Walorski VA Clinic and was hired in April of 2022.
“The VA is helping me be the best doctor I can be and bring excellent care to these Veterans. I very much identify with Veterans and honored taking care of them. They have helped me just as much as I have helped them. I foresee myself having a long and fulfilling career at the VA.”
Dr. Ernest Vera-Vazquez’s coworkers describe him as “impactful and great to work with”.
“Dr. Vera-Vazquez is the best doctor I have seen since using the VA. He listened to what I was saying and took immediate action to help determine if there was anything wrong. I have never had a doctor who took the time like he did. I hope he remains my doctor for years to come”, said a Veteran patient.
On behalf of VA Northern Indiana employees and leadership, we congratulate Dr. Vera-Vazquez on this incredible honor and for his continued dedication and commitment to our Veterans.
