By Alex Sharpe, Public Affairs Officer

In a ceremony this week, VA Northern Indiana Health Care System (VANIHCS) celebrated our first Daisy Award recipient, Megan Kern, RN.

Megan is a registered nurse on our Marion Substance Abuse Recovery Therapy Program (SARRTP) Unit. Megan has worked as a nurse for 22 years and has been working with VANIHCS since November of 2023.

The Veteran nominator shared the following:

“Megan is far and away the best VA employee I have interacted with. Her commitment to Veterans is above reproach. Being in the substance abuse treatment program was much better with her around because every single day she strives to treat Veterans in recovery as she would want to be treated. This includes the utmost respect for us and her position. While at SARRTP, I twice came down with a respiratory illness. Her bedside manner was remarkable. I feel like she genuinely cares about me as a human as well as a patient.”

“Any time I had any medical questions, she was able to answer them or get an answer in a timely manner. Everyone on the unit respects her because she has earned it. I was proud to have been able to present Megan her Veteran's Recognition Award, that is voted on by patients in the unit, for January 2024. Megan Kern is an exceptional nurse and I loved the time I was able to spend in the program because of it.”

The DAISY Award is a special honor given to extraordinary nurses for their compassionate contributions and excellent clinical care. Nurses can be nominated by patients, families, and co-workers.

On behalf of the VANIHCS, we thank Megan for her dedication and commitment to Veterans and making a difference in their lives.
