2022 Outstanding Physician of the Year
Dr. James Ibinson is VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System’s 2022 Outstanding Physician of the Year.
Ibinson was selected for the annual honor from a field of 12 VA Pittsburgh physicians who received a monthly Chief of Staff Clinical Excellence Award during fiscal year 2021. Voting was open to all VA Pittsburgh staff physicians.
Ibinson received a plaque prior to the April medical staff quarterly meeting.
“Without exaggeration, receiving this award is perhaps the greatest honor I can think of because it comes from peers,” Ibinson said.
Dr. Jignesh Unadkat nominated Ibinson for a monthly clinical excellence award in October. Unadkat said Ibinson is an ideal example of how a physician can excel clinically while also “juggling multiple other hats.”
Ibinson is chief of anesthesia in Surgical Services at VA Pittsburgh’s University Drive campus. His duties include managing the operating room schedule, overseeing resource allocation among surgical services and providing clinical care as a general anesthesiologist. He also conducts research using functional neuroimaging to decode the brain pathways involved in pain processing and perioperative neurocognitive disorders.
“What sets him as a perfect candidate for the clinical excellence award is his ability to work with multiple teams to help everyone provide excellent care for our Veterans,” said Unadkat.
Ibinson said his goal at this time is to help move Surgical Services “through the rest of the hurdles COVID brought” and bringing additional services into VAPHS, such as the ability to perform transcatheter aortic valve replacements.
