October 7, 2024

Saginaw , MI — The “Celebrate Recovery” Domestic Violence Awareness Month event will take place at the Aleda E. Lutz VAMC’s Sgt. Major Kenneth Rice Pavilion, located at 1500 Weiss St., Saginaw, MI on October 18, 2024 from 10:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

The event will feature a host of VA programs, community partner agencies, resources, music and food trucks. All Veterans, family members and the public are invited to attend. Wear purple to show your support!

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant concern, affecting both men and women. In the US, between 22 and 57 percent of women and children are homeless due to fleeing domestic violence. Studies indicate that 36% of women and 34% of men experience physical violence, sexual violence or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Those numbers go up for Veterans and servicemembers, with some estimates reaching as high as 58%. Active duty servicemembers are three times more likely to engage in IPV than civilians.

IPVAP (Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Program) is available across the nation at all VA sites. The program serves both Veterans and employees and provides resources and support to those who experience violence in relationships.

Of equal importance, VA offers Strength at Home (SAH) programming for those who use or are at risk of using violence in their intimate relationships. SAH is an evidence-based program developed specifically for active-duty military and Veterans and is appropriate for anyone experiencing communication conflict in partner relationships to those who are court involved for domestic violence.

“Prevention of conflict and promotion of healthy relationship skills is key to building relationship wellness across the lifespan,” stated Kim Sawatzki, DVAM/IPV Program Coordinator. “We encourage Veterans, their partners and VA staff to talk with their provider or myself to learn about available resources and services. Together we can make a difference.”
