New Nurse Trainee Program

PHNP Application instructions.
Flyer with instructions to apply for new nursing program.
By Ryan Coverdell, Public Affairs Officer

For the first time, Reno VA was awarded VA National Office of Academic Affiliation funding for our Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Residency program, to start this year.

What does this mean? We have three full-time recent graduate PMHNP resident trainee positions starting in September 2024 through August 2025.

We have three full-time recent graduate PMHNP resident trainee positions starting September 2024 through August 2025 available with compensation for the Reno VA’s first comprehensive PMHNP Residency program!  Each position is considered an appointed Health Professions Trainee (HPT) and is a temporary employee of the Department of Veterans Affairs.  These are not revenue generating positions; therefore, the candidate may fully focus on gaining expertise in care delivery, identify an area of change and truly make an impact in veteran psychiatric mental health care.

This is an excellent opportunity to transition the newly graduated and certified PMHNP into practice and gain exposure and experience in a (national competency based, structured sequential educational position not counting towards clinic staffing and) well-rounded inpatient and outpatient comprehensive psychiatry service with 100% protected learning time; gaining valuable experience, confidence, and furthering education without concern of risking their new license.

The candidate will be a recent graduate within one year, ANCC certified as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Across the Lifespan (PMHNP-BC); eager to dedicate their talents and efforts to improving the lives, health, and well-being of our Veterans, our team, and our partners; a US Citizen; hold an unrestricted RN and NP license; and be willing to complete this year-long residency program; and willing to receive compensation and benefits as an HPT.  Additionally, the successful candidate may receive an offer for a full-time position with newly gained, recent VA residency experience as a PMHNP-BC in the Reno VA following successful completion of the residency program as an HPT.  As well, the successful program graduate is qualified to apply for any open PMHNP-BC position in any VHA facility across the United States.

Please forward this to any recent graduate meeting the description above who would like more application information for our first PMHNP Residency program at the VASNHCS as a Resident trainee.  We are excited to share this opportunity for PMHNP’s who are certified and seeking a residency program, and we look forward to hearing from these HPT candidates!
