Kerrville VA Medical Center hosts Centennial Celebration to commemorate its 100th anniversary

PRESS RELEASE

April 17, 2024

Kerrville , TX — The South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) held the Kerrville VA Medical Center’s Centennial celebration in Kerrville, Texas. The ceremony was celebrated with Kerrville employees, congressional representatives, local and state officials, and key community stakeholders.

The Kerrville VA Medical Center first provided care to Veterans in 1923, becoming the 93rd hospital in the nation dedicated to the care of Veterans under the Veterans Bureau. Following World War II in 1945, construction of a main hospital building began, which has since been modernized, refurbished, and air conditioned to meet the needs of its Veterans.

The ceremony began with remarks from Executive Director, Dr. Julianne Flynn, and VA Heart of Texas Health Care Network, Dr. Wendell Jones. “It’s a privilege to be with you all and participate in this historical moment as we honor the oldest and longest running VA facility in Texas,” said Executive Director, Dr. Flynn. “Not only has this facility provided health care for the last 100 years, but it has always been dedicated to caring for this country’s Veterans.”

In March 1995, the Kerrville VA Medical Center and the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital merged to form STVHCS. Since then, the two facilities have maintained a strong relationship for inter-hospital referrals and sharing of patient services to provide the best patient care possible.

“The Veteran is at the heart of everything that we do,” VA Heart of Texas Health Care Network Director, Dr. Jones. “Veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors have served and sacrificed for our country, and now, it’s our job to serve them by continuing the legacy of providing timely access to world-class health care and earned benefits, and we will never settle for anything less.”

The Kerrville VA Medical Center is one of 15 sites of care within STVHCS, providing primary care, geriatric, palliative care and mental health to more than 10,000 Veterans. Kerrville VA Medical Center is also one of the two inpatient campuses within the health care system.
