The Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System (SAVAHCS) Center of Development and Community Engagement Service recognized three exceptional individuals for their dedication to Veterans during a ceremony on April 24, 2024.

Aryan Malik, brimming with enthusiasm, was named the 2023 Youth Volunteer of the Year. Since joining the SERVE program in 2022, Aryan has brightened the days of Veterans at SAVAHCS by contributing over 208 hours of service. He is dedicated to serving our Veterans and volunteers throughout the school year assisting with special events and projects.

“Hearing the Veteran say thank you, you made my day better! Brings me back time and time again,” said Aryan.

Marilyn Zabowski, the recipient of the 2023 Female Volunteer of the Year award, has tirelessly ensured Veterans feel comfortable and cared for through the In-Home Visitor Program. She advocates for each Veteran she works with and helps to ensure their dignity and the quality of their care. Marilyn’s commitment is reflected in her remarkable 6,780+ volunteer hours accumulated since 2016. She also volunteers in primary care preparing patient reminder letters and is an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

“I volunteer because my dad and brothers served our country. I told those guys now it's my time turn to serve the country by volunteering at the hospital,” said Marilyn.

Bob Mayfield, a constant source of compassion and commitment, was named the 2023 Male Volunteer of the Year. Bob serves as a valuable member of the SAVAHCS Hero's Welcome Program, donating over 330 hours of his time since 2019. Bob makes sure the needs of every inpatient Veteran are met and each Veteran is getting the quality treatment they deserve.

“This year’s theme was SAVAHCS Volunteers Makes a World of Difference,” said Kimmy Kamerer, Center of Development and Community Engagement Service Chief for SAVAHCS. “Our volunteers come together for one common cause to serve our Veterans and Heroes. Our selfless volunteers are priceless. They show up every day with bells on to serve our Veterans and staff. I couldn’t do this job without them.”
