VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System is proud to introduce the Diversity PACT, the first LGBTQ+-focused patient-aligned primary care team within the VA system. This innovative initiative aims to address the unique healthcare needs of LGBTQ+ Veterans with a specialized approach.

“The Diversity PACT’s inception is the result of persistent advocacy and collaboration.” said Tresa Hanshew, Lead LPN for the Diversity PACT. “We have long championed the needs of LGBTQ+ Veterans, consistently voicing their concerns and advocating for improved care.” Hanshew’s tireless efforts, combined with the passion of new Primary Care Physician Dr. Kelly Thibert, led to the creation of this specialized team. Both have worked closely with community members to understand their needs and build a culturally competent team to ensure a smooth and effective launch of the Diversity PACT.

The Diversity PACT is composed of a diverse group of healthcare professionals, each bringing unique expertise to the table. Dr. Kelly Thibert is the Primary Care Physician for the team and has several dedicated nurses including and Tresa Hanshew (Lead LPN). The team also has a dedicated pharmacist, social workers, behavioral health clinician, and Whole Health coach.

Veterans seeking care from the Diversity PACT will benefit from a team that not only understands but is also dedicated to addressing the specific health concerns and disparities faced by the LGBTQ+ community. “For Veterans who are private about their gender or sexuality, sharing this information with their care team is essential,” said Hanshew. “It ensures that they receive comprehensive and tailored healthcare that respects and addresses their unique needs.”

VASNHS decided to create the Diversity PACT due to a confluence of factors, including the availability of dedicated staff and resources. While other VA clinics across the country offer LGBTQ+ or transgender-specific care, the VASNHS Diversity PACT’s focus on comprehensive primary care for LGBTQ+ Veterans is a pioneering approach.

“When this was first advertised, the overwhelming response was ‘Oh my gosh, it is about time’,” said Dr. Thibert. “Veterans have said that they have been wanting this as they feel it will be a safe space where the provider is knowledgeable and able to provide most of their care in one stop.”

The Diversity PACT currently has a panel capacity of 110 Veterans. Given the anticipated interest and community outreach, the team expects a robust enrollment as word spreads about this new resource. The team officially began seeing patients in June, and is open for new LGBTQ+ Veterans looking to enroll. For LGBTQ+ Veterans interested in joining the Diversity PACT, a consult is needed at this time.

The success of the Diversity PACT in Las Vegas could serve as a model for other healthcare systems. By creating similar programs, Dr. Thibert believes other facilities can help address the healthcare needs of LGBTQ+ Veterans, aligning with the VA's mission and values and improving overall health outcomes for this underserved population. “This landmark initiative represents a significant step forward in ensuring that all Veterans receive the comprehensive and respectful care they deserve.
