St. Louis VA recognizes Veterans during National Salute to Veteran Patients week

PRESS RELEASE

February 17, 2023

St. Louis , MO — VA St. Louis Health Care System recognizes and honors Veterans from February 12th-18th during National Salute to Veteran Patients week.

“I am excited to celebrate National Salute to Veteran Patients Week! Our VA joins other VAs across the country to engage in a series of activities to pay tribute and express our appreciation to Veterans, to increase community awareness of our role as a VA medical center and volunteerism.” said Candace Ifabiyi, Medical Center Director at VA St. Louis Health Care System.

Since 1978, VA has used the week of Valentine’s Day to provide a weeklong commemoration for Veterans. Local commemoration efforts include a special luncheon in the Community Living Center, visits from local Veteran Organizations and Volunteers, and assorted breakfast treats and handmade Valentine cards from local community groups, schools, and VA staff.

At both Jefferson Barracks and John Cochran divisions, assorted gifts and valentines donated by Veteran service organizations and other community groups were distributed to our inpatients and outpatients throughout the week. Bluegrass Band and Veronica Mary Agnes, the musician, donated their time and music talents to JB and JC Veteran patients. In Jefferson Barracks long term care units, staff even coordinated bowling, karaoke and pizza night for Veteran inpatients. Thank you to all community partners and VASTL CDCE (Center for Development and Civic Engagement) for making this week so special for our Veterans.

“The smiles on the faces of our patients and their appreciation for us going the extra mile in all we do said it all,” added Ms. Ifabiyi.

VA St. Louis Health Care System is seeking volunteers to drive Veterans to and from their appointments, provide clerical support, help with recreation activities, and more. In addition to donations and as a compliment to in-person volunteer assignments, VA St. Louis also provides volunteers with virtual assignments.
