Hurricane season kicked off on June 1, 2024, and it’s forecasted to have above normal activity in the Atlantic. If you haven’t begun to prepare for the storms, today is the best day to get started.

Although hurricanes give us a few days warning to prepare, it’s best to have supplies and a plan to avoid the chaos of shopping and trying to get gas with everyone else that waited until the last minute.

What is essential in a hurricane prevention kit?

  • A two-week minimum supply of medication, regularly used medical supplies and a list of allergies
  • A list of the names and model numbers of specialized medical equipment
  • Batteries and chargers
  • Flashlights
  • Cash
  • A list of important phone numbers
  • Food and water to last 7 days
  • Important documents such as insurance cards, social security cards, medical records and banking information
  • A full tank of gasoline
  • Pet food and water to last 7 days
  • Clothing and sturdy boots, shoes or gloves
  • Establish a plan for shelter or evacuation route

This list is not exhaustive, but it will get you started. Many factors influence the severity of a hurricane and they have been known to switch directions without warning. Being prepared is in everyone’s best interest in case that occurs.

If a hurricane is projected to make landfall in the Tampa area, here’s how to get updates and announcements from James A. Haley Hospital’s Emergency Operations Center on closures, safety measures and more.
