Jon Maggard, police chief at VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, recently earned the Patriot Award from the Department of Defense for his role in supporting active duty employees.

The award is presented to managers who make the effort to support their employees who are Guard and Reserve members through a wide-range of measures like flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed.

"I nominated Chief Maggard for his support during my recent long-term mission," Lt. Brian Grajek, TVHS police supervisor and Army guardsmen said in his nomination packet. "This was my seventh mission since being with VA in 1999. Knowing my employer continues to support the members of the reserve components is comforting for me and my family during missions that our nation calls on us to perform."

Maggard has served as the police chief at Tennessee Valley Healthcare System for nine years, and this marks his third Patriot Award.

"I believe it's every leader’s responsibility to support their team members in desired activities, especially when it deals with our obligation to support the guard, reserves or active duty mission. I appreciate the Department of Defense's willingness to recognize me and other leaders for the support we provide," Maggard said.

The Patriot Award is presented by Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense program established in 1972. To nominate a supervisor for an award, visit www.esgr.mil/Employer-Awards/Patriot-Award
