Tomah Veterans go for Gold in Utah

Tomah VA Golden age game
By Amanda Batchko, Public Affairs Specialist/Outreach Coordinator

Eight Veteran athletes, one coach, and one invited official represented the Tomah VA at the National Veterans Golden Age Games (NVGAG) in Salt Lake City, Utah, from August 23rd to 30th, 2024. One of six VA sponsored national events, the games are open to Veterans aged 55 and above.

The event promotes fitness for life and encourages Veterans to add movement to their daily lives through sporting activities.

The team committed to training for months prior to the actual event as part of their preparation, and that hard work paid off.

The diverse group of five women and three men earned nine Gold Medals, seven Silver medals, and received several fourth an fifth place finishes in their age brackets.

Bound together through service, participating Veterans at the event inspired onlookers in the stands with their competitive spirit and camaraderie.

During one standout moment, an 82-year-old woman gave her all at the POWER WALK- nearly four laps around the track.

Despite a fall and sweltering summer heat, she refused to quit. Her determination, and that of her fellow competitors, showcased the unwavering spirit of our nation's heroes.

Tomah VA is proud of Team Tomah for everything they accomplished and for representing themselves, their families, and our facility so well.

The team encourages other Veteran athletes to join Team Tomah.  We are committed to supporting our Veterans year-round and helping them succeed in their events.

Join us at next year’s games in Memphis, Tennessee from May 30th to June 6th, 2025.

Interested Veterans can reach out to Debbie Phelps or Dawn Parker at 608-372-3971 for more information.
