Washington DC VA Medical Center Announces New Deputy Director

Washington , DC — The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has appointed Suzana Iveljic as the Deputy Director of the Washington DC VA Medical Center.

Iveljic will assume the role on April 23, 2023, where she will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of all administrative services supporting the Washington DC VA Medical Center and six Community-Based Outpatient Clinics, which provide care for more than 100,000 Veterans. She will manage an operational budget of $850 million.

“We are excited to bring Ms. Iveljic on board to join our team as the deputy director,” said Washington DC VA Medical Center Director Michael Heimall. “Her sound leadership qualities and proven experience will be valuable assets for employees and volunteers, and most importantly, for the Veterans we are honored to serve.”

Prior to her appointment, Iveljic led the Shared Services Directorate in VA’s Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization from 2020 to 2023. Iveljic started her VA career in 2005 as the Director of Operations for the Advanced Platform Technology Research Center of Excellence at the Cleveland VA Medical Center. She progressed through several positions within VA, including Strategic Communications Director for the Veterans Health Administration, Office of Research and Development, from 2010 to 2015, and Director of Digital Media, Veterans Health Administration, from 2015 to 2020. In 2021, Iveljic was selected to complete a rotation at the Environmental Protection Agency, as part of the President’s Management Council in support of President Biden’s climate change agenda.

Iveljic is a graduate of VA’s Senior Executive Service Candidate Development Program, and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s Leadership Education and Development Program. She holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Akron, as well as two Bachelor of Science degrees in Communications and Healthcare Administration from Ohio University.


The Washington DC VA Medical Center is a tertiary care, complexity level 1B hospital, providing comprehensive primary and specialty care in medicine, surgery, neurology and psychiatry. The medical center has 164 acute care beds, 30 psychosocial residential rehabilitation treatment beds, and a 20-suite Fisher House. It houses a 120-bed Community Living Center that offers a full spectrum of extended care services. The medical center also provides care at six Community-Based Outpatient Clinics in Southern Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia, as well as support to homeless Veterans at the nearby Community Resource and Referral Center.
