Dr. Gwen Hampton was named Interim Chief Nurse Executive at the Washington DC VA Medical Center in July 2022.

Prior to her appointment, she served as the Clinical Nurse Specialist and the Chief Nurse of Mental Health at the Salisbury VA Healthcare System from 2015 to 2022.

Before stepping into an executive leadership role, Dr. Hampton served as the Nurse Manager for Inpatient and Outpatient Mental Health, and the Substance Abuse and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Programs at the Salisbury VA Healthcare System.

Dr. Hampton earned a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from East Carolina University and a Master of Science in Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. She brings 30 years of experience to the Washington DC VA Medical Center, 11 of which have been spent within the VA Health Care.

A native of China Grove, North Carolina, Dr. Hampton is honored to work with and serve Veterans by providing them with safe, quality health care. One of her most significant accomplishments has been  helping to transform the mental health nursing care delivery model into one focused on recovery and relationship-based care. This new nursing care delivery model improved Veteran-staff engagement, employee and Veteran satisfaction, and reduced restraints/seclusion episodes.
