Dr. Omar Bazzaz was appointed as the Chief of Staff for the Amarillo VA Health Care System (AVAHCS) on Dec. 5, 2021.
Dr. Bazzaz is responsible as the Chief Medical Officer for medical services in the AVAHCS. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Bazzaz served as the Interim Chief of Staff and was the Assistant Chief of Medical Service within the AVAHCS.
Dr. Bazzaz arrived in the United States in 2008, when his family was resettled as a refugee in Boston, Mass., and is a proud Naturalized Citizen of the United States. He was recertified to practice in the United States through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates in 2010 and completed an Internal Medicine Residency with Texas Tech University Health Science Center (TTUHSC) in Amarillo. Prior to coming to the VA, he served as the Chief of Medicine at Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo.
Dr. Bazzaz is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at TTUHSC and is the VA Internal Medicine residency site director.
Dr. Bazzaz graduated with a M.B.Ch.B. from the College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad, Iraq, in 2006. He also completed an Executive Master of Science in Health Care Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, in 2021. He is American Board certified in Internal Medicine and is a Certified Revenue Cycle Representative through the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
